Stefano Domenicali is targeting qualifying ahead of the Red Bulls to help Fernando Alonso get back ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has revealed that the aim for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is to qualify ahead of the Red Bulls.

Fernando Alonso has seen his championship lead overhauled by Sebastian Vettel heading into the final three of the season.

Domenicali has said that in order to regain the lead, the Ferraris must get ahead of Vettel and Mark Webber in qualifying.

"I'm always optimistic so I can see [the glass] as half full because considering the position we started in qualifying [in India], to achieve that result after a fantastic and superb race of Fernando is something important," Sky Sports News quotes Domenicali as saying.

"Of course on the other hand the fact that Vettel has won the race is not really the thing that we wanted because the gap has increased but this is the situation.

"We have three races to go where we have to stay absolutely very rational and try to maximise mainly our qualifying performance."

Vettel has a 13-point lead over Alonso after his victory in India.
