Rene Arnoux, a former driver for the illustrious Ferrari team in the 1980s, sees the internal conflicts within Red Bull as a potential boon for Ferrari's chances at contending for the world championships in 2024.

Now 75, the Frenchman observes that Ferrari has had a promising start to the new season. "They are much closer to Red Bull," he shared with La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Not quite at Red Bull's level, but almost."

Arnoux also pointed out the perceived imbalance within Red Bull's lineup, noting, "But also true is that Red Bull only has one car at the front, because (Sergio) Perez is a number two - sometimes even number 3! He often disappears."

In Melbourne, Max Verstappen experienced his first mechanical failure in two years due to a stuck rear brake. Arnoux suggests that the team's performance might be impacted by off-track issues, including management disputes and the Christian Horner scandal.

"I am for Ferrari," Arnoux openly admits, "but first of all I hope that the mess and intrigue at Red Bull is over, because I want to see a real duel."

"I don't want Ferrari to beat them because of things like that. On the other hand, I hope they can at least fight for the constructors' title, also because Perez does not operate at a very high level."

Arnoux believes that without significant problems, Ferrari stands a good chance against Red Bull this season. "In fact, I think that if Ferrari doesn't have any major problems this season, they almost have a better chance now than Red Bull."

The drivers' championship also appears within reach, especially with the leadership of Frederic Vasseur, a fellow Frenchman, at Ferrari. Arnoux thinks Carlos Sainz could achieve more victories and potentially vie for the championship.

When asked about the impact of French management at Ferrari, reminiscent of Jean Todt's era, Arnoux quipped, "I don't know if that's right, but it's a tradition I like."

He praised Vasseur's quick adaptation to the regulations and his ability to motivate and strengthen his team. "In a short time, he (Vasseur) has made optimal use of the existing regulations. He showed that he values his staff and that he can strengthen them. Slowly but surely he gains tenths on the track."

Arnoux concludes with confidence in Vasseur's problem-solving abilities, "Above all, I see him solving many of the problems he has encountered so far." body check tags ::
