Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas has won the Turkish Grand Prix, the Finn seeing off the challenge of Max Verstappen to post his first victory of the season.

Bottas started the race on pole after Lewis Hamilton was docked 10 places due to a change of engine, and he took full advantage to strengthen his grip of third place in the standings.

The start passed by without too much incident, Fernando Alonso the only driver to temporarily spin out of control, and Bottas was able to seize full control of the race.

Aside from a brief period towards the end when Ferrari's Charles Leclerc got his nose in front, Bottas lead from start to finish to win by just under 15 seconds.

Verstappen was content with his runner-up spot, but it was a different story for Hamilton who finished in fifth position after being asked to pit by Mercedes.

The defending world champion had previously voiced his displeasure at the call, and Verstappen now holds a six-point lead in the Drivers Championship.

Sergio Perez claimed third place for Red Bull, four seconds ahead of Leclerc, while Great Britain's Lando Norris ended the race in seventh position for McLaren. body check tags ::
