Damon Hill: 'Double points will make Formula 1 exciting'

Formula 1's decision to award double points at the last race of the season will be good for the sport, according to former World champion Damon Hill.

Formula 1 will benefit from the introduction of double points for the final race of the season and the increased chances of drivers still being in contention to win the title, according to Damon Hill.

The suggestion, put forward late last year, has come in for criticism from some quarters, but the 1996 World champion doesn't understand the indifference to the proposal and believes that it will make for a greater spectacle.

Hill told The Times of India: "It's going to be unpredictable with double points proposed in the final race of the season. It will make things exciting. I've heard a lot of people say it's stupid but why isn't it a good idea? Maybe it's a great idea. It's all artificial anyway.

"The championship is likely to go down the wire this time. Anything that increases the chances for somebody else [to become champion] is a good thing. The greater the unpredictability, the more attractive it becomes."

Hill lost the 1994 World championship by one point to Michael Schumacher when the German driver infamously collided his Williams car at the season-ending Australian Grand Prix, which caused the Briton to retire from the race.
