Formula 1 race director Niels Wittich has publicly denied claims that he "stepped down" from his position to "pursue new opportunities," despite the shock FIA statement suggesting otherwise.

The FIA has announced that Wittich, who took over race director duties following the dramatic events of the 2021 season finale, will be replaced by Rui Marques from Formula 2 and Formula 3. Marques will step into the role starting with the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix and continue through to the end of the season and beyond.

Reacting to the sudden shift, Sky News reporter Craig Slater noted that "senior figures" throughout the Formula 1 paddock were "shocked and surprised" by Wittich's unexpected exit. Speculation is mounting that internal disagreements with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem may have played a role.

When questioned about the move, the 52-year-old German, Wittich, clarified to motorsport-magazin.com: "I have not resigned." Sources close to the situation suggest that Wittich was informed only shortly before the public announcement.

Initially brought on to share responsibilities with Eduardo Freitas, Wittich was chosen to succeed Michael Masi, who had faced significant backlash after his handling of the 2021 championship decider between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
