Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has prevailed from a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix which saw Mick Schumacher involved in a big crash which caused a significant delay to the race.

At the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this month, Perez was forced to hand Max Verstappen a place, a result of a team order from Red Bull chief Christian Horner.

However, there were no such instructions this time around as Perez won in Formula 1 for just the third time, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jnr.

After wet weather caused a delay and a red flag, the race got underway behind the safety car, and by the first round of pit stops, Perez was ahead with pole sitter Charles Leclerc down in fourth.

The race was again stopped on lap 30, a consequence of a high-impact crash involving Schumacher, who walked away seemingly unscathed, which saw the German's car break in two.

When the race resumed over 20 minutes later, it became clear that the race would not be completed inside the two-hour time limit, leaving Perez to try to hold onto his advantage with each title challenger on his tail.

Teammate Verstappen said on the radio that Perez's tyres were beginning to wear excessively, but the Mexican held off the pressure and his nerve to seal victory ahead of Sainz Jnr and Verstappen, Leclerc finishing less than three seconds adrift of the winner in fourth spot.

While Verstappen holds a nine-point lead over Leclerc in the standings, Perez has moved to within 15 points of his teammate, with Mercedes driver George Russell the best of the rest. body check tags ::
