Liam Lawson's demeanor in Abu Dhabi may have offered a subtle clue about his Formula 1 future as Red Bull edges closer to announcing its driver lineups for 2025.

The 22-year-old New Zealander is widely regarded as the frontrunner to replace Sergio Perez, whose seat at Red Bull Racing is under intense scrutiny. Red Bull's senior management, including advisor Dr. Helmut Marko, convened on Monday to make key decisions.

"For the umpteenth time: There is a meeting, and all the facts will be on the table," Marko told Austrian broadcaster ORF. "I hope we come to a decision, and then the announcement should be made soon. You will not hear any more than that from me."

Reports suggest that Red Bull has already decided to part ways with Perez, but negotiations about his existing 2025 contract must be resolved before any official announcement.

Marko emphasised the need for a consistent second driver to support the team's goals. "Our first team must have two drivers who regularly score points," he explained, pointing out that Perez finished 285 points behind teammate Max Verstappen this season.

"Mathematically, that explains everything," Marko said, adding that Perez's struggles cost Red Bull the chance to secure the top two spots in the constructors' standings.

Yuki Tsunoda is scheduled to test the championship-winning Red Bull car in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, but the Japanese driver is not considered a strong contender for the Red Bull seat. His ties to Honda, which is switching to Aston Martin in 2026, and his history of emotional outbursts are factors working against him.

"Please watch the last 24 races," Tsunoda urged reporters in Abu Dhabi. "See how many times I shouted on the radio. Maybe only in the first race. I've definitely calmed down, and I believe I have proved myself quite well."

Meanwhile, Lawson, who remains the top candidate, kept reporters guessing.

"You keep smiling at me," he joked on Sunday when surrounded by reporters. "I know you're trying to get something out of me. I know where you're going, but right now I don't know what the future holds for me.

"I hope to find out in the next few days."

When asked whether he expects to wear navy blue (Red Bull) or white (Racing Bulls) overalls in 2025, Lawson replied: "I hope I have a seat—that's all I care about right now.

"Obviously, my priority is to be in Formula 1, so we'll see."

The official announcement from Red Bull is expected later this week.
