Williams's Valtteri Bottas admits that it was "disappointing" to miss the opening race of the 2015 Formula 1 season in Australia with a back injury.

Valtteri Bottas has admitted that it was "disappointing" to learn that he would not be able to race in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix this morning.

The Williams driver was due to start from sixth in Melbourne, but he damaged a disc in his back during Saturday's qualifying session and was unable to pass the FIA's medical tests in order to race.

The Finn told the constructor's official website: "I have done a lot of work since the issue with my back came in qualifying to get myself ready, starting treatment immediately, so the news that I couldn't race today was obviously disappointing but I respect the decision.

"I now have two weeks until the next race to receive further treatment to ensure I will be back to full fitness and even stronger in Malaysia.

"I'm very eager to get back in the car and race because the FW37 is looking competitive and I'm confident we can fight for podiums."

The race was won by reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton, while Bottas's teammate Felipe Massa finished fourth.
