Lowry two putted the 18th to seal The Open title at Royal Portrush.

  • Ireland's Shane Lowry led all the way after an incredible third round
  • Tommy Fleetwood sealed second place six shots further back
  • Tony Finau ended with a seven-under 71 for third
  • Lee Westwood completed his round with 73 to finish in a tie for fourth

1859

Graeme McDowell tipped Lowry to “create his own shadows” as the County Offaly man secured his maiden major crown.

McDowell revealed that the very first time they met, when he won the Irish Open as a 22-year-old amateur back in 2009, Lowry’s supreme confidence shone through.

“He can create his own shadows, he’s always been talented,” said McDowell of Lowry. “I remember the first day I met him, I’d just shot 61 at Baltray the week he won.

“And he came in having shot 62, and he didn’t even really introduce himself, he just came in and said ‘I can’t believe you beat me by one out there’. And I was like ‘who’s this kid?’.

“But we’ve become very good friends, I’ve always respected his game so much, because he’s very ballsy.

“He’s a phenomenal driver of the ball, and he’s one of the best chippers of the ball I’ve ever seen.

“He’s a great kid. To have an Irishman on top of the leaderboard is extra, extra special.”

Roared on by a sell-out crowd undeterred by the miserable conditions, Lowry carded a closing 72 to finish 15 under par and become the fifth Irish player to lift the Claret Jug after Fred Daly, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.

1845

Lowry fought back tears as he mentioned his parents, adding: “They sacrificed so much for me when I was younger and I’m so happy that I can hand them this trophy tonight.

“My wife and my little girl, to have them here today is just extra special.

“Last but not least the volunteers and all the fans, thank you so much, this one’s for you.”

1841

Messages of congratulations continued to flood in for Lowry after his victory.

1838

Speaking after being presented with the Claret Jug on the 18th green, Lowry said: “What can I say? I just have so many people to thank, first of all the R&A for such a great event.

“To have an Open here on the island of Ireland and at Royal Portrush is amazing. I love this place and to be able to come here and play an Open was great.

“A lot of people in my backroom team; my coach Neil (Manchip), my caddie Bo, my management team – I definitely wouldn’t be standing here without them.”
