Adam Scott has insisted that he needs to play "tougher" over the weekend if he is to stand a chance of challenging for the Open Championship.

The Australian carded one-over 73 for the day at Hoylake in Liverpool, leaving him currently three-under - six shots behind leader Rory McIlroy, who is yet to finish his round.

"It was a good finish, I played lots of good golf today though I made some errors from good spots which is a cardinal sin," Scott told BBC Sport.

"It was tough to make putts out there and it was one of those grinding days on the links. Being under par is good but being a little closer to the lead is nice. I'm playing very well, I just have to eliminate those mistakes and play a little tougher over the weekend I think."

Scott shot birdies on his final two holes after opening his round with two bogeys.
