High winds cause havoc on day three of The Open at St Andrews

A Monday finish at The Open is increasingly likely because of a lengthy delay due to high winds on day three at St Andrews.

Just half an hour of golf was managed on day three of The Open at St Andrews as high winds wreaked havoc on the Old Course.

Forty-two players failed to complete their second rounds yesterday because of a three-hour rain delay and they were unable to finish this morning.

Play is not expected to resume until 3pm this afternoon, meaning that a Monday finish could be likely.

When asked why the players were sent out for just half an hour this morning, R&A director of rules and equipment standards David Rickman told BBC Sport:"While it was challenging and very windy we weren't seeing any particular problems.

"What has been verified by subsequent forecasting is we saw an increase in gust speeds from the high 30s (mph) into the 40s, which was the tipping point."

With the greens at St Andrews fast and exposed, many players' balls were being blown off the green this morning.

One person to suffer was overnight leader Dustin Johnson, who bogeyed the par-five 14th upon this morning's resumption to drop into a share of the lead with England's Danny Willett, the clubhouse leader on nine-under-par.
