American rookies Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth are on course to record their third straight win after moving one shot ahead of Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer after nine holes.
After Rose and Kaymer had got themselves into the lead after three holes, the American duo hit back when Kaymer missed a par putt on the fourth green.
The fifth was shared but a bogey at six from Rose and Kaymer allowed the young twosome to move in front and they extended that when Spieth made birdie at seven.
Reed missed a putt for the three-shot lead on the eighth, but a stellar approach from Spieth on the ninth gave him the chance of a birdie.
However, after Rose had guaranteed a half for Europe, Reed missed the left-hand side of the cup to allow the hosts to pull a shot back at the turn.
