Jason Day to reclaim world number one spot

Jason Day will take back the world number one spot from rival Jordan Spieth on Monday.

Australian golfer Jason Day will return to the top of the world rankings on Monday despite spending the week at home in Ohio awaiting the birth of his second child.

The 27-year-old first took the top spot when he won the BMW Championship last month, but he lost the place to Jordan Spieth after the American won the Tour Championship.

Neither man has been in action since the Tour Championship, but Day's fine late season form, which also included a win at the Canadian Open, will seek him usurp his rival.

"It was a tough week for me but I ground it out around the house," Day told the Australian Associated Press.

"In all seriousness while it is a little strange to get it this way it is just proof that the hard work we put in as a team this year paid off and at the end of the day every week at the top counts and is exciting.

"I know things will likely change again as I continue my off-season so I know I need to get back at it and work even harder than last year to make it easier to be at number one into the future."

After Greg Norman and Adam Scott, Day is the third Australian, and the youngest ever, to be world number one.
