Billy Horschel stands firm to post big win at Memorial

American Billy Horschel holds his nerve during the final day to win the Memorial Tournament by four shots.

Billy Horschel has won his seventh PGA Tour title with a dominant victory at the Memorial Tournament.

A third-round 65 helped establish a five-shot lead heading into Sunday's play, the American a clear favourite to prevail in Ohio.

Horschel endured a quiet opening nine holes, playing it in one-over-par, and he remained on that score for his round as he headed to the 15th hole with a two-shot lead.

However, it was here where the world number 17 produced a piece of magic, holing an eagle putt from 53 feet to put him on the brink of victory.

Although he would bogey the 17th hole, a well-constructed par on the last was more than enough to secure a four-shot win, nearest challenger Aaron Wise dropping a shot on the last.

Wise finished two shots clear of third-placed Patrick Cantlay and Joaquin Niemann, with recent US PGA Championship runner-up Will Zalatoris one of five players to share fifth.

Jon Rahm was among the group in 10th position, but Rory McIlroy had to make do with 18th place after only shooting 74 for his final round. body check tags ::
