England's Matt Fitzpatrick missed out on the European Tour's first 59 by a few centimetres in the second round of the KLM Open on Friday.
The 21-year-old had already carded 10 birdies and no bogeys in 17 holes when his birdie putt at the last came up just short.
Had it gone in, Fitzpatrick's round would not have gone down in official records because preferred lies are being used at Kennemer Golf Club due to rabbit damage across the course.
"I was thinking about the 59 after the front nine to be honest," Fitzpatrick, who has had three top-three finishes in his last eight events, told reporters.
"I was already celebrating going out in 28 actually so to give myself a shot at that magic number was great. It's a shame that putt at the end came up short but I'll take 60 any day of the week."
The former US Amateur champion's 10-under-par round has put him in contention after a one-over start yesterday, but he is still three shots behind the current clubhouse lead of Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen (64, 64).
