The Italian followed up his course-record round of 62 with a 70 to end on 12-under-par.
Sweden's Alexander Noren is also at the top of the leaderboard after a second consecutive round of 66.
Ricardo Gonzalez and Matteo Manassero are both on 11-under, while SSP Chowrasia is a shot further back.
World number one Luke Donald carded a 68 to put him on nine-under with a group of nine others.
One of the biggest climbers up the leaderboard was Phil Mickelson, who improved on a disappointing opening-round score of 73 with an impressive 64 to leave him on seven-under.
