Jon Rahm wins Genesis Invitational to return to world number one

Jon Rahm returns to world number one with victory at the Genesis Invitational, replacing Scottie Scheffler who only moved into first place last weekend.

Jon Rahm has continued his remarkable recent form to win the Genesis Invitational, returning to world number one in the process.

Although the Spaniard has held the position in the past, he has recently had to watch Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler occupy that illusive spot, Scheffler's win at the WM Phoenix Open seeing him replace McIlroy.

However, Rahm is back above that pair having posted his fifth triumph in nine tournament starts, withstanding the challenge of Max Homa to prevail at Riviera Country Club.

Rahm did not have it all his own way on Sunday, posting three bogeys in his first 12 holes, but he holed out from nearly 46 feet on the 14th hole to ensure that the momentum swung back in his favour.

Later on 16, Rahm almost recorded a hole-in-one, eventually having to settle for a birdie from under three feet, and it ultimately made the difference as Homa failed to respond.

Rahm had the luxury of a two-shot lead heading into the last and he comfortably made the par that was always going to be enough to register a win by that margin.

Homa holed a five-footer on the last to ensure that he finished second on his own, ahead of Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris and Kevin Mitchell who finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Scheffler produced his second 68 of the week to earn a share of 12th spot, another excellent week despite it not keeping him at the top of the World Golf Rankings.

For the second straight week, McIlroy was back down the leaderboard, only managing tied 29th after shooting a level-par 71 in his fourth round.

Tiger Woods, making his first competitive start since July, ended the tournament in a share of 45th position after having to make do with a 73 on Sunday. body check tags ::
