USA fightback sets up nail-biting Ryder Cup climax

Jim Furyk's team put some early red on the board in the singles in Paris.

The United States drew first blood on the final day as the 42nd Ryder Cup headed for a thrilling climax at Le Golf National.

Europe's 10-6 overnight lead meant they needed just four-and-a-half points from the 12 singles matches for a ninth win in the last 12 contests, but Justin Thomas gave Jim Furyk's side an early boost with victory over Rory McIlroy in the opening match.

All square heading down the 18th, Thomas hit a stunning tee shot to pile on the pressure and McIlroy's drive plugged in a fairway bunker, forcing the four-time major winner to attempt to play out sideways.

McIlroy could not escape the sand at the first attempt, found water with his third shot and, with Thomas close in two, eventually conceded on the fairway after failing to hole out for an unlikely five.

Paul Casey birdied the 17th and agonisingly missed for another on the 18th as his match with three-time major winner Brooks Koepka finished all square, but moments later Webb Simpson completed a 3&2 win over world number two Justin Rose.

Tony Finau then pulled off the biggest surprise of the day so far, ending Tommy Fleetwood's hopes of becoming the first European to compile a 5-0 record with a comprehensive 6&4 victory.

There was better news elsewhere as Jon Rahm was two up on Tiger Woods with four to play and Thorbjorn Olesen led Jordan Spieth by four holes with six remaining, while Sergio Garcia was two up on Rickie Fowler.
