Paul Azinger has backed the idea of giving Davis Love III a second chance to captain the USA at the Ryder Cup in 2016.
Reports have suggested that the decision has been made to give the captaincy to Love, who was in charge when Europe overturned a four-point deficit on the final day in 2012 to triumph at Medinah.
Azinger was believed to be among the candidates for the role, but he believes that pairing Love with Fred Couples could help the hosts to success at Hazeltine as they look to recover from three successive defeats.
"If true, I believe that Davis is an excellent choice to lead U.S. Ryder Cup in 2016," Azinger revealed on Twitter.
"The public may not remember Freddie's influence in 2012. I think Fred's friendship with Davis gets him there again."
Azinger was the last American captain to lift the trophy in 2008.
