The world number three hit seven birdies during a faultless round in Orlando to open up a two-shot lead over Henrik Stenson at the halfway stage.
The Swede registered just one bogey in a round of 66, and England's Justin Rose recorded the same score to move within one shot of second place.
Paul Casey is in eighth position - six shots off the lead - while Andy Sullivan and Australian Adam Scott are in a tie for 25th spot.
