Joost Luiten sets the pace at the KLM Open after shooting a 65 to take a first-round lead in what proved a strange opening day in Holland.

Joost Luiten has shot a first-round 65 to take the outright lead in a bizarre opening day at the KLM Open in Holland.

Luiten recovered well after bogeying the first, sinking three birdies and an eagle at the seventh before grabbing another birdie at the last to finish up on five-under-par.

The Dutchman heads into day two with a one-stroke lead over Gary Stal, Edoardo Molinari, Andrea Pavan and Jamie McLeary, who was forced to finish up after 15 holes.

McLeary was one of several players that did not get to complete their first round after play was suspended due to bad light, linked to an earlier incident involving Fabrizio Zanotti.

Play was delayed for nearly two hours after the Paraguayan was taken to hospital after being struck on the head by a ball on the 16th fairway.

Zanotti, who began on the 10th and was on level par at the time of the accident, later tweeted: "Thanks a lot for the messages, I have been discharged from the hospital. Now I will have to take a couple of weeks off."

England's Andy Sullivan is among those in contention, ending the day on three-under after recording six birdies to compensate for a double bogey on the fourth.

The competition resumes at 7am tomorrow.
