Defending champion Graeme McDowell is out of the World Match Play Championship in Kent after finishing third in Pool Larson.

Defending champion Graeme McDowell has failed to reach the quarter-finals of the World Match Play Championship after losing to Joost Luiten on day three in Kent.

The USA's Patrick Reed was the first to book his place in the quarter-finals of the tournament following a 3&2 victory over Jamie Donaldson, who failed to bring his Ryder Cup heroics to day three.

Donaldson has not made it into this weekend's action, nor has his Ryder Cup teammate Stephen Gallacher, who has finished third in Pool Gabrielsson despite beating Victor Dubuisson 2&1 today.

The Frenchman has topped the group and will head into the quarter-finals, along with Pablo Larrazabal, who knocked Shane Lowry out with a 2&1 victory.

In Pool McCormack, the second qualifying spot turned into a straight head-to-head battle between Jonas Blixt and Paul Casey, and after the pair finished all square through 18, they returned to the first hole in order to find a winner.

It was a poor hole for Casey as he missed his par putt to give Blixt a place in the final eight, while McDowell missed a crucial putt on the 17th to hamper his chances of reaching the next round.

The Irishman failed to recover as Luiten secured victory by two holes to top Pool Larson, while Mikko Ilonen joined him in the quarter-finals with a one-hole win over Alexander Levy.

In Pool Palmer, Henrik Stenson qualified at the top of the group following a 2&1 victory over Jaidee Thongchai, and George Coetzee also made it through, despite losing to Francesco Molinari on day three.
