Rory McIlroy breaks the Wells Fargo Championship record with a third-round score of 11-under par which takes him into the clubhouse lead.

Rory McIlroy has broken his own Wells Fargo Championship record after carding an 11-under 61 in the third round of the tournament.

The Northern Irishman shot a bogey-free round which included five birdies in a row on holes 12 to 16.

He previously broke the Championship record with a 10-under 62 in 2010, which was matched by Brendon de Jonge last year.

He finished the round with an overall score of 18-under par and took the clubhouse lead, three shots ahead of American Webb Simpson.
