Nicholas Thompson has finished day one of the Farmers Insurance Open with a one-stroke lead thanks to an impressive round of eight-under-par at Torrey Pines.
On a day when the headlines were once against stolen by Tiger Woods, who withdrew from the event after 11 holes with a back problem, Thompson carded seven birdies and an eagle on his way to a 64 on the North Course, which is considered the easier of the two courses used at the competition.
Thompson's 64 was enough for a one-shot lead ahead of Michael Thompson, while Brooks Koepka and Cameron Tringale are a shot further back.
Ian Poulter is among a group of players on five-under, but there was disappointment for the highest-ranked player in the field as world number four Justin Rose, who was three-over through 17 holes before play was suspended due to bad light.
