Hettie Otto shot a nine-under-par 62 to move into the lead at the Italian Open on a day when Stephen Gallacher kept his Ryder Cup hopes alive.

South African Otto made nine birdies and an eagle as he threatened to become the first ever player to break 60 on the European Tour on his way to reaching 15-under and establishing a three-stroke lead.

Bernd Wiesberger, who was in the final group with Rory McIlroy at the US PGA Championship earlier this month, is second on the leaderboard having matched his effort of 66 from yesterday.

Gallacher, who needs to finish second in Turin to displace Graeme McDowell in the final qualifying place for Europe's team for Gleneagles, was one of the day's big movers and is seven-under after 36 holes.

Having started the day on level par, the Scot appeared in danger of missing the cut before a run of six consecutive birdies on the back nine brought him into a 13-man chasing pack behind the leaders.
