Phil Mickelson reveals that he will change his tactics for the US Open after finishing joint second at the Masters at Augusta National.

Phil Mickelson has revealed that he will take a different approach to the US Open after finishing as runner-up in The Masters at Augusta National on Sunday.

The five-time major winner's fellow American Jordan Spieth earned the green jacket on 18-under for the tournament, while Mickelson finished four shots behind.

The 44-year-old, who finished joint second with Justin Rose, scored 274 for the tournament, but he intends to play a more "controlled" game when he joins the field at Chambers Bay for the US Open in June.

"My tactic the last two weeks heading into here was try to make a lot of birdies because I knew that I had to come out here and make a lot of birdies, fire at pins, get good distance control, short game is sharp and make putts," Mickelson told reporters.

"But heading into the US Open, I'll have a different tactic. I'll try to play more of a controlled style game, getting the ball in play, getting short game sharp, that's always important, trying to play more of a strategic style."

Mickelson has won every major apart from the US Open.
