England are certain to win gold in the men's team artistic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games, while host nation Scotland will claim a historic silver medal in Glasgow.

England's team of Kristian Thomas, Louis Smith, Max Whitlock, Nile Wilson and Sam Oldham have one hand on gold in the men's artistic gymnastics in Glasgow.

All of the medal contenders have completed their routines, but several other nations have one final rotation scheduled for this evening and results cannot be confirmed until then.

Scotland lie in second and will claim their first ever team gymnastics medal at a Commonwealth Games, with Canada third, but England have ran away with the competition.

They posted a massive score of 266.804 despite an injury to Oldham on the vault apparatus, with London 2012 individual medallist Smith and Wilson, 18, stepping up in his first senior outing to help England close in on their first gold in this event since Manchester 2002.

Pommel horse expert Smith has only recently come out of retirement to compete at the Commonwealths, and Whitlock also starred, breaking 90 for his individual score for the first time in his career.

The host nation finished on 257.603 to virtually secure silver and become the first new medallist in this event since the 1978 Games, leaving Australia off the podium as they continue to struggle at the SSE Hydro.

Canada finished third with a score of 252.078, with Australia fourth, Wales fifth and New Zealand sixth.
