Alex Danson: 'England have every chance of winning women's hockey gold'

England's Alex Danson says that England have "every chance" of winning women's hockey gold if they repeat their performance from earlier today.

Alex Danson believes that England have a real chance to beat Australia in the women's hockey gold-medal final at the Commonwealth Games if they match the character shown against New Zealand.

Katie Glynn's late goal for the Kiwis cancelled out Lily Owsley's first-half opener in the semi-finals earlier today, meaning that the game required penalties to separate the two.

Jason Lee's side came out on top 3-1 in the shootout to progress through, however, setting up a meeting with 2010 gold medallists Australia tomorrow.

"We are just delighted to get into that final; a silver is nice – a gold is better," Danson told reporters. "We've done our homework on them already and we are a very professional outfit, it's going to be a tight game with lots of counter attacks and we'll have to grab the opportunities when they do come.

"It's going to be a great showcase of hockey, it's going to be fast, athletic, skilful and they'll be lots of shots and hopefully the result will go our way.

"I'm just very proud of this group and how they've responded to a tough few weeks, they've showed a lot of character and if we show that character again in the final then we've got every chance."

England took silver at the 2010 Commonwealths in Delhi.
