Over 5,000 protesters line the streets around the Maracana Stadium ahead of Brazil's victory over Spain at the Confederations Cup.

Anti-government protests marred the build-up to the Confederation Cup final yesterday as people continued to express their anger at Brazil's decision to host the 2014 World Cup.

It has been reported that over 5,000 protesters lined the streets near the Maracana Stadium, where Brazil later scored three goals against Spain to win the final.

A hoard of people involved in the demonstration clashed with police, prompting officers to throw shock grenades when hit with rocks from protesters, according to the Daily Mail.

The protests are down to the Brazilian government's decision to spend money on hosting sporting events instead of investing in public services.
