Former England footballer David Beckham gets choked up while recalling a story about the death of a four-year-old girl during his UNICEF speech at the United Nations.

Former England footballer David Beckham had to hold back the tears when making a speech on behalf of UNICEF at the United Nations in New York.

The 40-year-old recalled a story about a four-year-old girl Viana, who drowned after being swept out of her father's arms during the Philippines typhoon in 2013.

Beckham visited Viana's mother, father and sister Venus during a trip to the Philippines last year as UNICEF's goodwill ambassador.

While telling the story of the youngster's death, the father of four had to compose himself before admitting "that story will never leave me".

During his speech, Beckham said: "A day and a half [after the typhoon] unfortunately Viana was found face down and unfortunately she had died. This was one of the most devastating stories I heard."

Beckham was speaking at the launch of Voices of Youth, which includes a group of young bloggers who invite others to learn about development issues.
