England captain Steven Gerrard pays tribute to 'inspirational' teenage fundraiser Stephen Sutton after he lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday.

England captain Steven Gerrard has described teenage fundraiser Stephen Sutton as an "inspiration" after he lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday morning.

The 19-year-old raised over £3.2m for the Teenage Cancer Trust after he was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer four years ago.

Sutton surpassed his original target of £10,000 after receiving help from a number of famous figures once his campaign launched into the public eye.

"I was fortunate enough to meet Stephen at Wembley when he came to an England game last year, he's a huge fan and his enthusiasm was amazing," said Gerrard via the Football Association's official website.

"What he has done has been incredible, raising funds that will make an enormous difference to so many people. A young lad with such bravery, facing up to adversity by showing complete selflessness. He's an inspiration, and my thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

FA general secretary Alex Horne added: "On behalf of The Football Association, my deepest condolences go to Stephen's family and friends.

"I know he touched the lives of many here in England and around the world, particularly with his incredible fundraising and positive spirit. To achieve all he did, even when extremely unwell, is testament to Stephen's remarkable character. He was a true inspiration."

Stephen's mother Jane confirmed her son's passing on the teenager's Facebook page this morning.
