Liverpool 'break Living Wage promise for workers'

Liverpool are accused of failing to pay all members of staff the "real" Living Wage, despite promising to do so from the start of this season.

Liverpool are not paying the "real" Living Wage despite promising all members of staff would receive it this season, according to a report.

An investigation from The Telegraph found that not all adults working for the Merseyside outfit are receiving the independently-calculated payment of £8.75 per hour.

Instead, jobs at Anfield are said to have been advertised for the statutory minimum of £7.38, despite Liverpool stating last November that they would ensure all workers were paid the Living Wage from June.

An example given by the publication is the role of "event steward", which offers the legal minimum pay of £7.38 for over-25s via a sub-contractor.

A Liverpool spokesperson is quoted as saying: "Some workers are employed through third-party contractors and, as part of our commitment, we are working with our suppliers to ensure that, within a maximum of three years, all third-party workers are paid the real Living Wage if they are not already."

West Ham United are also allegedly advertising vacancies for less than the London Living Wage of £10.20 per hour.
