Gerry Byrne, England World Cup winner and key member of Bill Shankly's legendary Liverpool team of the 1960s, dies at the age of 77.

England World Cup winner and Liverpool legend Gerry Byrne has died at the age of 77.

The former defender was a member of the World Cup-winning squad of 1966 under Sir Alf Ramsey and also represented the Reds for the entirety of his career, having made 333 appearances for the Merseyside club.

Often noted as one of Liverpool's most courageous full-backs, Byrne produced a legendary display in the 1965 FA Cup final as he played for 83 minutes with a broken collarbone, in a fixture that saw the club win the trophy for the first time with victory over Leeds United.

Tributes are to be paid to Byrne, who is widely recognised as one of the major contributors to Bill Shankly's legendary Reds side in the 1960s, when Liverpool play Swansea City on Sunday.
