Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson undergoes emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage after being rushed to hospital.

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

The 76-year-old is understood to have been rushed to hospital at around 9am today, having been complaining about his health since Thursday.

The operation reportedly went well, but Ferguson remains in a serious condition in hospital and faces "a period of intensive care" to recover.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage," read a statement released by Manchester United.

"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."

Ferguson's son Darren was absent from Doncaster Rovers' final game of the League One season this evening due to the serious family issue.

Alex Ferguson stepped down from his role at Manchester United five years ago following a trophy-laden 27-year reign which included 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

The Scot was last seen publicly during last Sunday's Premier League match between United and Arsenal, before which he presented Arsene Wenger with a gift to mark his final visit to Old Trafford.
