Ole Gunnar Solskjaer jokes that he will evict Virgil van Dijk from the £4m mansion the Liverpool defender has been renting off him for the past year.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joked that he plans on kicking Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk out of his house as he prepares to take over at Manchester United on a permanent basis.

Van Dijk has been living in Solskjaer's £4m mansion just outside of Manchester during his 14 months as a Liverpool player.

Having only been appointed by United on a short-term deal in December, Solskjaer decided to stay at the Lowry Hotel, but he is expected to be announced as the Red Devils' full-time manager in the coming weeks.

That led to media reports that the Norwegian is going to evict Van Dijk so he can move back into his old home.

Asked whether he had already spoken to the Dutch defender about his living arrangements, Solskjaer told reporters: "Yeah, he's evicted!"

A source is quoted by The Sun as saying: "The property is the one Ole and his family lived in since his time at United and when he moved away it was eventually put up for sale.

"But when no takers came it was offered for rent - and when van Dijk signed for Liverpool he came to see it and loved it.

"Ole probably never thought he would be coming back to Manchester but now he is it really is ironic he can't move back into his old place which he still owns."

Former United boss Jose Mourinho spent 127 weeks at the Lowry Hotel during his time in Manchester, allegedly racking up a bill of £800,000.
