The 28-year-old is thought to have a fractured skull and a punctured lung after being assaulted in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Ryder is currently in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital, according to TVNZ.
Police are expected to hold a press conference over the next 24 hours to clarify the situation.
