Newcastle United scrap their end-of-season awards dinner due to their fight for survival in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have cancelled their end-of-season awards dinner due to the club's current predicament on the pitch.

John Carver's side are just two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League with two games left to play.

Prior to the Magpies' 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion last weekend, the team suffered eight defeats on the bounce.

Next Wednesday, the Newcastle players, coaches and various business, who have already bought tables, were due to hold their end-of-season bash in one of the suites in St James' Park.

However, it has now been scrapped as the club fear that they will anger supporters who remain discontent about the club's current status.

"Newcastle United Football Club has made the very difficult decision that in view of the current league position, it would not be appropriate for the team and coaching staff to be celebrating the season and collecting awards at a time when our only focus is on the next two games and securing Premier League status," the Daily Mail quotes a club spokesman as saying.

"The club would like to extend its apologies for any inconvenience caused to those businesses who had purchased tables to support the event, but we hope that you can appreciate our decision has not been taken lightly."

The event was organised by the club's charity - the Newcastle United Foundation.
