Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has been assaulted in a Spanish bar, local police have confirmed.
A British man was arrested after punching the footballer at Crystal's Bar in Punta Ballena, Magaluf, at about 2am BST on Sunday.
Clark was reported to have been knocked unconscious and subsequently rushed to Son Espases Hospital in Palma after being hit in the face by the man, with whom he had previously rowed.
Police subsequently confirmed that the 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international had suffered a lip injury, but could not confirm that he had been knocked out.
In addition, they revealed that Clark had gone to hospital in a taxi while his friend - who was assaulted by the same suspect - was taken by ambulance.
A spokesman for Calvia Town Hall, which covers the Magaluf area, confirmed: "Local police arrested a 32-year-old British man on suspicion of two assaults. He was handed over to the Civil Guard the same night so he could be taken to court.
"Both men who were hurt were attended by medical staff. They were both British. One was taken to hospital by ambulance and the other said he didn't require an ambulance transfer to hospital and made his own way to Son Espases Hospital in a taxi.
"It will be up to the local courts now to determine the possible criminal responsibility of those involved in this incident but only one man has been arrested and is currently being investigated as a suspect."
Clark made 22 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle last season.
