Northumbria Police promise to 'lock up' the minority of Newcastle United fans who wreaked havoc following their side's defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Chief superintendent of Northumbria Police, Steve Neill, has given assurances that the Newcastle United supporters guilty of causing havoc over the weekend will be 'locked up'.

Twenty seven arrests were made following the Tyne-Wear derby, which resulted in a 3-0 win for Sunderland on away turf at St James' Park.

It is believed that a minority of Newcastle fans tried to provoke the travelling supporters as well as attack police by throwing bottles and other objects.

"There is lots of CCTV all over Newcastle city centre, we had specially trained officers out with video cameras yesterday and there is lots of stuff on mobile phones," Neill told talkSPORT. "We will lock these people up, I can assure you of that."

The city's Metro service was forced to close for some time after the match due to the violent scenes.
