Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle has died at the age of 36 from cancer, his family have confirmed.

The news comes a week after Lyle decided to end his treatment for acute myeloid leukemia and enter palliative care, with his wife Briony saying at the time: "He has given everything that he's got to give."

According to a statement from Golf Australia, Lyle died on Wednesday surrounded by friends and family.

Lyle, who made a career-high world number 142, previously battled the disease as a 17-year old then again in 2012, before it returned once more last year.

Speaking after his death today, Briony Lyle said: "He asked that I provide a simple message: 'Thanks for your support, it meant the world. My time was short, but if I've helped people think and act on behalf of those families who suffer through cancer, hopefully it wasn't wasted.'"

Lyle is survived by Briony and their two daughters Lusi, six, and Jemma, two.
