British Boxing Board of Control warns Tyson Fury over homophobic, sexist comments

The British Boxing Board of Control reminds Tyson Fury of his responsibilities as world heavyweight champion following controversial comments that he made last year.

The British Boxing Board of Control has cleared Tyson Fury of any wrongdoing over alleged homophobic and sexist comments but warned the WBA and WBO heavyweight champion that he must be careful about what he says away from the ring.

Previous comments that Fury has made about women, homosexuality and abortion came to light in the build-up to his world title fight with Wladimir Klitschko and after he was nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The BBBofC interviewed Fury yesterday and stressed the importance of his "heavy responsibilities" as world heavyweight champion, a title the governing body described as "arguably the most prestigious in sport".

In a statement, the BBBofC said: "Tyson Fury has made comments in the media that have caused offence to members of our society. However, there is no suggestion that he has broken the law by exercising his right to freedom of expression. In such circumstances, the stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control have been advised that it cannot interfere with his basic human rights.

"Having said that, the stewards of the Board have made it clear to him that as world heavyweight champion, arguably the holder of the most prestigious title in sport, there are heavy responsibilities upon him to avoid making controversial, non-boxing comments.

"He has assured the stewards that he understands the responsibilities upon him and has expressed regret that he has caused offence to others, which was never his intention."

Fury beat Klitschko by a unanimous points decision in November and will defend his belts in a rematch against the Ukrainian on May 7.
