David Beckham has hit a stumbling block in his plans to build a football stadium for his Major League Soccer franchise in Miami.
The retired footballer is hopeful of developing a ground, which would also include a restaurant and a nightclub, in PortMiami in Florida.
However, a group of shipping businesses and billionaire car dealer Norman Braman, who owned the Philadelphia Eagles from 1985 to 1994, have launched a campaign against Beckham's proposal.
The consortium took out a full-page advertisement in newspapers the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald on Monday to express their views due to fears that the new ground would prevent the expansion of the Panama Canal.
Last month, Beckham vowed to work with those opposing the plans for the 25,000-seater stadium.
