Ali Carter: 'I had to beat lung cancer for my son'

Snooker player Ali Carter reveals that knowing his son needed him helped him beat lung cancer.

Snooker player Ali Carter has said that seeing his four-year-old son after being diagnosed with lung cancer motivated him to beat the disease.

The two-time World Championship finalist, who previously battled testicular cancer, found out that he had a tumour on one of his lungs in May, but has just one procedure left to complete his treatment for the illness.

The 35-year-old told BBC Sport: "I thought it was game over for me when they said there was a shadow on my lung. I had a gut feeling inside that it was cancer and it was just a waiting game until I had all the scans and the doctor told me it was cancer. Fortunately, he said it was one he could cure.

"When I came home after I saw the consultant and he diagnosed me, Max was sitting on my sofa. I came through the door and he looked at me and said 'daddy you are my best friend'.

"I had to go upstairs and I burst into tears. I had been told I had a type of cancer in my lung and it was too much. But I knew my son needed me, and that was my driving force to get myself better."

Carter is due to play his first tournament since being diagnosed next month.
