EFL plans huge rise in live TV games

The EFL outlines proposals to almost treble the number of games broadcast live on TV in the UK.

The EFL is reportedly planning to treble the number of games broadcast live in the UK from the 2019-20 season.

At present, 112 games a season are broadcast live from across the Championship, League One and League Two but that number will grow to 324 per season under the next set of TV rights.

That figure will include a maximum of 228 games from the Championship's 552 fixtures - some 41% - and represents a significant rise from the current number of 92.

According to The Times, the EFL is planning to split the rights into two packages - a weekend package, with 228 games, and a midweek package of 96 games. The successful broadcasters will be able to show different games simultaneously, as happens at present with the Champions League and Europa League.

A third package for the EFL Cup is believed to offer broadcasters the potential to broadcast every game live should they desire.

The new proposals are designed to significantly increase the TV revenue earned by the EFL domestically, with an expected bidding war between Sky Sports and BT Sport likely to deliver a healthy boost on the current deal, worth around £90m a season.

The news follows the EFL's announcement of a new service called iFollow, which will allow fans of EFL teams outside of the UK to watch every game live starting from the upcoming season.
