Demetrio Albertini reveals that the FIGC could reduce the numbers of teams in Serie A from 20 to 16 to make the league "more competitive".

FIGC vice-president Demetrio Albertini has revealed that the number of teams in Serie A could be reduced from 20 to 16.

The reduction of teams in the Italian top flight would be made in an attempt to make the league "more competitive" and also will reduce costs, claims the Italian.

"Reducing the number of teams in Serie A could be the path to follow," Albertini told Radio 101.

"It would reduce costs and make the tournament more competitive as well as intriguing."

The number of teams in Serie A was increased from 18 to 20 in 2004.
