Scottish broadcaster James Alexander Gordon has passed away at the age of 78.

Gordon will be remembered as one of the most recognisable voices in British broadcasting after he spent 40 years reading the classified football results on BBC radio.

The Scotsman retired from his position with the broadcaster last year after he was diagnosed with cancer, which required throat surgery.

Head of BBC Radio Sport Richard Burgess said: "James was an iconic radio voice, who turned the classified football results on BBC radio into a national institution.

"He was also a true gentleman, who was loved and admired by his colleagues. He took enormous pride in his work and I know he was greatly touched by all the tributes he received upon his retirement last year."

Charlotte Green took over from Gordon to read the classified football results on BBC Radio 5 live.
