German chancellor Angela Merkel has offered her support to a gay footballer who recently spoke of his torment within the modern game.
The anonymous star, who currently plies his trade in the Bundesliga, said that every day is a battle to hide his sexuality from his teammates for fear of his safety.
"You need not fear," Merkel told a press conference.
"I am of the opinion that everyone who has the strength and courage [to come out] should know that we live in a state where he essentially does not have to be fearful.
"That is my political statement."
Merkel took office in November 2005.
