Oscar Pistorius is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and is at risk of suicide, a court hears.

Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius needs to continue being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder in order to avoid the risk of suicide, a court has heard.

The 27-year-old old is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot dead through a bathroom door at his home in Pretoria on Valentine's Day last year.

The double amputee's murder trial was adjourned for 30 days as he underwent mental evaluation as an outpatient at Weskoppies psychiatric hospital after it was revealed in court in May that the athlete has an anxiety disorder.

The findings of the psychiatric report, which declared that Pistorius did not have a 'mental defect' when he shot Steenkamp, were read out in the High Court and it was revealed that the athlete is "severely traumatised".

The court heard that Pistorius has been suffering from PTSD since the events that resulted in the death of the South African model last year.

Pistorius's lawyer Barry Roux stated that the athlete has no history of violence or mental instability.

Pistorius denies murder by maintaining that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four shots through the locked door.
