Prosecutor Gerrie Nel has described Oscar Pistorius as a "deceitful witness" while delivering his closing argument in the Paralympic champion's murder trial to the High Court in Pretoria.

Over the next two days, the prosecution and defence will deliver their statements to the court before Judge Thokozile Masipa retires to consider her verdict, which could take up to a month.

Pistorius has denied murder by claiming that he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a bathroom door at his home in Pretoria on Valentine's Day last year.

The prosecution argues that the double amputee shot the South African model after the couple had a row in the early hours of the morning.

Today, Nel told the court that Pistorius's evidence was "absolutely devoid of any truth", and that he is "always the victim of circumstance" and has "refused to take responsibility".

Nel also questioned Pistorius's version of events by pulling up the athlete's bail application, in which he is said to have claimed that he fired his gun because he believed that intruders had entered his home.

However, Nel told the court that Pistorius stated later during the trial that he thought intruders were coming out of the bathroom and that 'before he knew it' had fired the shots.

The judge has four possible verdicts to consider - premeditated murder, murder, culpable homicide, or not guilty.
