Australian rugby league player Filimaua Laalaai is convicted for attacking three homeless men at a Perth shopping mall.

Australian rugby league player Filimaua Laalaai has been convicted after attacking three homeless men in a Perth shopping mall.

The 20-year-old was handed a nine-month intensive supervision order, a $1,000 (£456) fine and 50 hours of unpaid work as punishment for the incident, which occurred in November last year.

CCTV footage captured the moment when Laalaai kicked and punched three men following a disagreement during a night out celebrating a friend's birthday.

In the video, the sportsman can be seen approaching a man as he cowers before punching him five times and kicking him 12 times.

Laalaai, who has played for Western Australia, also aimed a kick at the back of the head of one of the other homeless men who was lying defenceless on the ground.

According to The Mirror, Judge Birmingham told the court: "The people he was kicking were laying defensively on the ground. If he did that in a rugby game he'd never play again.

"You also took some pleasure out of the treatment you meted out. Your expression in the video is one of smugness, of amusement at the fact that you're being a big fellow in kicking people on the ground like a hero. You weren't. You were a coward."

Laalaai's defence team argued that the rugby player's actions were down to him being under the influence of alcohol.
